The Brussels City Museum/Musée de la Ville de Bruxelles is an absolute treasure, and one that I’d highly recommend to anyone visiting the Grand Place. Housed in the stunning Maison du Roi right on the square itself, the building alone is worth the visit before you’ve even stepped inside. Once in, the collection is wonderful, but the undisputed highlight for me was the remarkable display of old statues of Brussels. These ancient stone figures carry such a sense of history and character — you really feel connected to the city’s past as you stand before them. It’s humbling to think about how long they have watched over Brussels and the stories they could tell. The level of craftsmanship and detail preserved in these pieces is truly extraordinary. The museum does a fantastic job of bringing the history of Brussels to life in a way that feels engaging rather than overwhelming. The layout flows beautifully, and there’s a real sense of discovery as you move from room to room. Whether you’re a history buff or simply curious about the city you’re visiting, this museum offers a genuinely enriching experience. It’s the perfect complement to time spent exploring the Grand Place right outside its doors. A hidden gem that deserves far more attention than it gets . Don’t skip it!
One of the most impressive building in Grande Place, Bruxelles is the building that houses the Brussels City Museum. The architecture it's incredible and amazing. I took so many photos of it. Inside the building you will find a museum that tells the history of this magical city. I really enjoyed my time at this museum, I think I spend 1-2 hours inside! The museum focuses mainly on the history of how Brussels was formed, and it’s presented in a way that’s easy to follow. They provide an audio guide that you can easily access from your phone, which makes the experience more immersive and engaging. The museum it's a great spot to learn more about the city’s roots, culture, art and history! I highly recommend it!
The museum features beautiful original ornaments and a weather vane from Brussels City Hall. It briefly recounts the history of Brussels. The most interesting part is the story of Manneken Pis, with the original statue in the museum. It's a shame you can't go up to the tower or onto the balcony. It could use a more contemporary design.
The Brussels city museum is not a big one, it is a three floors building, so it suitable for small children as there are no big distances. The collection illustrates the story of the city, there are many mackets of the city through the years. In the museum you can see the original Manneken Pis. On the last floor, children can draw and have fun. Drawing materials are provided.
Grand Place in Brussels is absolutely stunning. The square is surrounded by beautiful historic buildings with incredible details, especially when you take time to look up. It feels lively at any time of day and even more magical in the evening. A must-see place and easily one of the most impressive city squares in Europe.
